Traveling to Kindergarten
The Birth- 2nd grade committee – one of five committees of the Birth-16 Council REACHigher P-16 council -has targeted the transition from Preschool to Kindergarten impacting child care professionals, parents and kindergarten professionals. Historically this transition has missed a needed connection between a child’s preschool teacher and his/her kindergarten teacher. Today children spend much of their early childhood years in the care of others while their parents work or go to school. Before entering kindergarten children spend an average of 3 to 5 years in the early care and education settings (Head Start, child care centers, family child care home businesses, public preschool). As a result, preschool teachers have developed long-term relationships with the family and the child. These relationships; what the child knows, how they learn, other issues identified and much more are integral to an effective transition to kindergarten.
The Birth- 2nd grade committee has created a document called Traveling to Kindergarten that enables the preschool teacher, parents, and the kindergarten teacher to share information that will make the child’s transition to kindergarten a much smoother process.
